Technical words
The CAD and workshop words used in SchoolCAD, explained simply, with their names in five languages.
These are the technical words you meet in SchoolCAD, each explained in a sentence or two. Under each word is its name in Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese and Hindi, the languages SchoolCAD can show next to English.

The main screen where you design your parts in 3D.

- Sketch
A flat 2D drawing on a plane or face. It is the first step for most 3D shapes.

- Plane
A flat, invisible surface you draw a sketch on. Top, Front and Right are the starting planes.

- Origin
The centre point of the model, where the three planes meet. Every position is measured from it.

- Axis
A straight line something turns around or is measured along. X goes across, Y goes front to back, Z goes up.

- Profile
A closed shape in a sketch (no gaps) that a feature such as Extrude turns into 3D.

- Region
One closed area of a sketch. Where lines cross, the sketch splits into separate regions you can choose between.

- Feature
One step in building the model, such as a sketch, an extrude or a fillet. Features are listed in order in the feature tree.

- Feature tree
The list of every step (feature) used to build the model, in order. Double-click a feature to change it.

- Part
One solid object, such as one piece of timber in a box. A model can have many parts.

- Face
One surface of a part, flat or curved. A box has six faces.

- Edge
A line where two faces meet. A box has twelve edges.

- Parameter
A named size, like t = 12 for timber thickness. Type the name into any size box; change it once and the whole model updates.

- Dimension
A size you type in for a line, circle or distance, so the sketch is exactly the right size.

- Constraint
A rule that holds sketch lines in place, such as horizontal, parallel or equal length.

- Coincident
Constraint: two points sit exactly on top of each other, or a point sits on a line.

- Parallel
Constraint: two lines run the same direction and never meet, like railway tracks.

- Perpendicular
Constraint: two lines meet at a right angle (90°).

- Tangent
Constraint: a line and a curve (or two curves) touch and continue smoothly without a sharp corner.

- Symmetric
The same on both sides of a centre line or plane. A symmetric extrude goes the same distance both ways.

- Midpoint
The point exactly halfway along a line.

- Fully defined
Every line in the sketch has its size and position set, so nothing can move. The lines turn from blue to black.

- Construction line
A dashed helper line used to line things up. It is not part of the final shape.

- Offset
A copy of a line or plane moved a set distance away, for example to draw a wall thickness.

Cut away the part of a sketch line that sticks out past where it crosses another line.

- Spline
A smooth, bendy curve drawn through points, for organic shapes.

- Arc
Part of a circle: a curved line with a centre and a radius.

- Radius
The distance from the centre of a circle to its edge. Half the diameter.

- Diameter
The distance straight across a circle through its centre. Shown with the symbol Ø.

- Extrude
Push a flat sketch straight out to make a 3D shape, or to cut into one.

- Revolve
Spin a sketch around an axis to make a round shape, like turning wood on a lathe.

- Sweep
Move a shape along a path to make a 3D form, such as a handle or a pipe.

- Loft
Blend smoothly between two or more shapes on different planes, such as a square base that becomes round at the top.

A rounded corner or edge.

- Chamfer
A corner or edge cut off at an angle (a bevel), usually 45°.

A small chamfer that takes the sharp edge off timber so it does not splinter.

- Hole
A round hole cut into a part at a sketch point, sized for a screw, bolt or dowel.

- Countersink
A cone-shaped hole so a flat-head screw sits level with the surface.

- Counterbore
A wider, flat-bottomed step at the top of a hole so a bolt head sits below the surface.

- Shell
Hollow out a solid part so only walls of a set thickness are left.

- Draft
A small taper on the walls of a part (often 3–5°) so it slides out of a mould.

- Mirror
Make a copy of a part flipped across a plane, like a reflection.

Make many evenly spaced copies of a feature or part, in a row (linear) or around a circle (circular).

A view that slices through the model so you can see inside, such as how a joint fits.

- STEP
A 3D file type that keeps exact shapes. It opens in other CAD programs and CNC software.

A 3D file type made of tiny triangles, used for 3D printing.

A 2D drawing file used by laser cutters and CNC machines.

- Engineering drawing
A formal drawing with front, top and side views, sizes and a title block, used to make the product.

- Third-angle
The way views are laid out in Australian drawings (AS 1100): the top view goes above the front view and the right view goes on the right.

A 3D-looking drawing where the three edges of a box go up and out at 30°.

The box on a drawing with the title, name, date, scale and projection symbol.

How big the drawing is compared to the real object. 1:2 means half size.

A long, narrow slot cut along a piece of timber, for a panel to slide into.

A step cut along the edge or end of a piece of timber so another piece fits into it.
US: Rabbet

- Butt joint
The simplest joint: one piece is placed against another and glued or nailed.

- Finger joint
A corner joint with interlocking square fingers, often laser cut for boxes.

- Dowel
A short round wooden peg glued into matching holes in two pieces to join them.

A joint where the end of one board sits in a groove cut across another, like a shelf in a bookcase.

- Mortise and tenon
A strong frame joint: a tongue (the tenon) on the end of one piece fits a matching slot (the mortise) in the other.

- Halving joint
Where two pieces cross, each has half its thickness cut away so they fit together flush.
Also called a half lap

- Dogbone
A small round relief cut into an inside corner, so a square-cornered part fits a slot cut on a CNC router (a round cutter cannot cut a sharp inside corner).
Also called a T-bone when it goes into one side

The width of material removed by a saw blade or laser beam.

A small gap left on purpose so parts slide together easily.

A full-size (1:1) printed shape you stick on the material and cut around.

- Laser cut
Cutting or engraving sheet material with a laser beam guided by a DXF file.

Mark a pattern into the surface without cutting all the way through.

A list of every part with its size and material, used to cut the pieces.

- Grain
The direction of the wood fibres. Timber is strongest along the grain.

- Acrylic
A clear or coloured plastic sheet that laser cuts cleanly.

- MDF
Medium-density fibreboard: a smooth board made from wood fibres and glue.

- Infill
The pattern printed inside a 3D print. More infill makes it stronger but slower to print.

- Supports
Extra plastic printed under parts of a 3D print that would otherwise hang in the air. You snap them off afterwards.
