Flange bends a wall up from each edge you click on a sheet metal part: the sides of a tray, the lip of a bracket, the back of a box. It works like Flange in Onshape and Edge Flange in SOLIDWORKS.
How to use it#
- Make a sheet metal part with Sheet metal.
- Click Flange.
- Click each edge to flange (orange shows the edge under the pointer). Click the sheet near an edge to pick it, and click a picked edge again to drop it.
- Set the Height and Angle.
- Click ✓.
Flanges on two edges that meet at a corner of the sheet close the corner: the first one picked runs on over the other's end, and the other stops a small gap short of it. Flanges that meet over a bend (the back edges of a U channel) are mitred.
Options#
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Edges | The edges picked. Clear starts again. |
| Height | How high the flange is. |
| Angle | How far it bends, up to 180°. |
| Position | Inside: the flange's outside face is where the edge was, so the part keeps its size. Outside: the flange's inside face is there, so the part grows by the thickness. Bend outside: the bend starts at the edge. |
| Height from | Where the height is measured from: the Outside of the sheet (as a ruler held against the part), the Inside, or the Bend end (just the flat part of the flange). |
| Corners | Closed or Open, where flanges meet. |
| Inset | A flange shorter than its edge, starting and ending this far in. A bend relief is cut at each end. |
| Bend radius | The inside radius of these bends. = part uses the sheet metal part's. |
| Relief | The bend relief at the ends of a part-width flange: the part's, a Rectangle, an Obround or a Tear. |
| Fold the other way | The flange bends to the other side of the sheet. |
Tips#
- To make a box from a flat sheet, flange all four edges at once: the corners close themselves.
- A flange can go on the top edge of another flange (a return flange), or on any straight edge of the sheet, including the edges of a hole.
- Look at the result flat with Flat pattern, and check the bend table before you fold it.
If it does not work#
- A flange is too short for its bend: make it higher, or the bend radius smaller.
- An edge to flange has gone: an earlier change took the edge away. Edit the flange and click the edges again.
- Two walls of the part lie over each other: the flanges run into each other. Make them shorter, or fold one the other way.
- Two walls of the part touch at a corner: leave a gap: make a flange narrower (Inset), or pick fewer edges.
