Decal

Put a picture (a logo, a label, your artwork) on a flat or round face of a part, to see it in the Part Studio and in Render Studio.

Decal puts a picture on a face of a part: your logo on a speaker box, a label round a bottle, artwork on a phone stand. The picture shows in the Part Studio, in pictures of the design and in Render Studio, so a folio render looks like the real product. It works like Decal in Onshape and Fusion and Decals in SOLIDWORKS.

A decal goes on a flat face, or on a round face (the side of a tube, a bottle or a can), where it wraps round like a label. It changes no shape: 3D prints, laser cut files and STL files leave it out. To cut or raise a logo into the part, trace it with Insert image and Extrude it.

Decal is an Advanced tool.

How to use it#

  1. Click Decal.
  2. Choose the picture: a PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF or SVG file. A PNG with a see-through background puts just the logo on the face.
  3. Click the face for it. The picture goes in the middle of the face, sized to fit.
  4. Click the face again where the middle of the picture should go, or type how far to Move it.
  5. Set its Width, Turn or Opacity if you need to.
  6. Click ✓.

Options#

OptionWhat it does
PictureThe picture. Change… chooses another one. Big pictures are made smaller (at most 1024 pixels across), so the design stays quick to save and share.
FaceThe face the picture is on. Click another face to move it there.
Width / HeightThe size of the picture on the face, in mm.
Keep the picture's proportionsOn: the height follows the width, so the picture is not stretched. Off: set the width and height on their own.
TurnTurns the picture, in degrees anticlockwise as you look at the face. ⟲ 90° turns it a quarter turn.
In the middle of the faceOn: the picture stays in the middle of the face, even when the face changes size. Off: it stays where you clicked.
Move across / Move upMoves the picture from there, in mm, across and up the picture.
Mirror the pictureFlips the picture left to right.
OpacityHow solid the picture is: 100% is solid, less lets the face show through.

Tips#

  • The picture is upright when you look at the face from outside: on a wall, the top of the picture is up; on the top of a part, it reads from the front.
  • On a round face, a picture as wide as the face's way round (π × the diameter) wraps right round, like the label on a can.
  • On the wall of a hole, the picture reads the right way round from inside the hole.
  • A decal moves with its part, and Mirror, Pattern and Transform copies keep it. A mirrored copy shows the picture mirrored, as a reflection does.
  • If a later feature cuts away the face, the decal goes with it. If the face is cut, the decal is left out where the part is cut away.
  • To change the colour or material of the part itself, use the part's colour and material, or Render Studio.
