Moving from Onshape? Your designs come with you. Onshape and SchoolCAD use the same tools and the same names (an Onshape Part Studio is SchoolCAD's Part workspace), so you can carry on where you left off. Your designs stay in Onshape too: SchoolCAD gets a copy.
How to bring a design across#
- In Onshape, open the document and right-click the Part Studio or Assembly tab at the bottom of the window. Choose Export….
- Set Format to STEP, choose Download, and click Export. For a document with several tabs, export each one; an Assembly brings all of its parts.
- In SchoolCAD, open Documents → From Onshape… (or press ` and type onshape) and choose the downloaded files, or just drop them onto the window.
Tick Open it as a new design to start a new SchoolCAD design named after the file; otherwise the parts go into the design that is open.
What comes across#
- Every part, as an exact solid, with its name and colour from Onshape. You can fillet, drill, cut, mate and draw on them like your own parts. See Import.
- Not the feature tree: STEP files carry the shapes, not how they were made, so Onshape's sketches and features stay in Onshape. To change an imported part's shape, change it in Onshape and import it again with Replace file… (double-click the Import feature).
- An Assembly's parts come in where the Assembly put them. Add joints in SchoolCAD to make them move.
Tips#
- Onshape names and SchoolCAD names are listed side by side in Coming from Onshape.
- A big Assembly can take a minute to open. Export just the parts you need if it is slow.
